“Broken Things”, Sarah Reeves – CD Review & Interview

I like to listen to worship while reading and studying. It’s truly remarkable when an album is so good that I have to put my books down. I found this in the new release from Sarah Reeves’ Broken Things. With 10 songs that last a little less than 45 minutes it gives you enough time to enjoy, but it’s short enough to cause you to want more.

I love tracks 2 and 3: “Mighty Wave” which leads right into “Spontaneous One”. “Mighty Wave” is such a soft and soothing track that it’s easy to get swept away. (I am sorry about the pun.) Both are very simple tracks, but carry such weight. “Mighty Wave” is about getting lost deep within the depths of God.

I love the chorus, “So I’ll pour my tears in the ocean. And I’ll leave my pain by the shore. With Your mighty wave You’ll sweep them away, till they are no more.” That is the heart of the song, being so lost in Jesus that people have to find Him to find you. The song leads into the first spontaneous track which is really an overflow of Sarah’s heart, about taking your cares, burdens, and weights and casting them aside and going before Him.

Sarah is a phenomenal piano player and it really shows in this album. Most of these songs are devotional worship as opposed to the traditional corporate worship. I love the refreshing nature of them. It’s like a cup of cool water for my soul in the midst of this hot summer.

“Spontaneous Two” is another amazing song. It begins with Sarah lightly flowing over the keys of her piano while lightly humming along. It’s a powerful song about how the Lord is dancing over us. It literally drips with the Love of the Lord. She is able to almost dance between the Love of God to us and our response of love back to him. It’s an intricate tango that really draws you into a deeper place of worship. It is not the kind of song you listen to lightly, but rather one that makes you lay out and just worship Him.

The final track on the album “Sweetest Name” is just amazing. There are probably dozens of worship songs written about the name of Jesus, but Sarah truly does it justice. That is a high compliment. She really honors and does justice to the name of Jesus. What other name is worth anything. It shows the beauty, the power, and the Glory of His name. It is with no reservations, my favorite song on the entire album. This is a song you need to hear.

Be sure to go get this album on iTunes or on SarahReeves.net!

New Life Worship “You Hold It All” – CD Review + Video Debut

THE REVIEW: (by Joe Cameneti, Jr.; review copy provided by Integrity Music)

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” This seems to be the approach of the seasoned New Life Worship Team as they release yet another remarkable live project recorded at their home church in Colorado Springs, Colorado. If you enjoy massive arrangements, epic imagery and corporate anthems, You Hold it All is the perfect worship experience for you.

This 12 track collection boasts a strong lineup of familiar faces with artists like Jared Anderson (“Rescue,” “Amazed,” “Coming Your Way”), Jon Egan (“I Am Free,” “Overcome”) and Glenn Packiam (“My Savior Lives,” “Your Name”) leading the charge. There are also some great vocal performances from the rest of the New Life team.

Although You Hold it All returns with the familiar New Life flare of albums past, it definitely seems to have different points of emphasis and a more “celebratory” feel. Their last project, Counting on God, was anchored by songs like “Overcome” and written in response to several devastating moments in their congregation’s recent history. So it was exciting to hear about the new things God is doing in and through this beautifully resilient example of the local church. Here are some tracks I especially enjoyed:

Lift the Name” – Fun, hooky and fresh – This is the often evasive “song # 1” that every worship leader desperately needs to jumpstart a service in the right way.

Our Messiah Reigns” – A Co-write with Ian Eskelin and Glenn Packiam (featured on his latest solo project). It focuses on the meaning of Messiah – the long awaited Savior, Healer and Restorer.

Great I Am” – The stand-out track of the album by Jared Anderson. Full of beautiful and epic imagery, painting the picture of worship around the throne. I think this is the next “Revelation Song.” Just saying…

Captives Free” – Based out of Luke 4 and Isaiah 61, Jesus fulfilled the Scripture, and now New Life gives us the opportunity to declare the same over our lives. I love the message that this song arms a believer with – The Spirit of God is now on us to do even greater things than Jesus Himself! (John 14)

Dry Bones” – Inspired by Ezekiel 37, this song has a strong prophetic message, speaking to the dry bones in our midst and commanding them to come back to life.

God Be Praised” – Another powerful song borrowed from Desperation Band’s Light up the World – adding a new bridge, “Out of ashes you lifted us. To the table you came and filled our cup.” (See video below)

You can’t get ahold of this album fast enough. Buy it. Learn it. And teach it to your congregation!

Tim Hughes “Love Shine Through” – CD Review

It’s been ten years since Tim Hughes’ Here I am to Worship release.  Since that time, the church worldwide has come to know his music as a standard in praise and worship during corporate worship times. His latest studio album Love Shine Through brings more great worship songs that I think the church will find inspiring.

The opening track “Counting on Your Name” kicks off with a rousing instrumental opening that sort of gives the impression that you’re opening a door to an album that is going to inspire.  Then the acoustic guitar kicks in with simple chords and strumming with an opening statement to the Lord  that sets the tone for this twelve track worship time - “My Name is written on Your hands, You’ve called me Your own…You’ve called me You’re own….” I can totally see this song as a killer worship song for churches around the world.

One of the things I’ve always appreciated about Tim’s music writing style is his ability to bring singable songs yet layer them with surprising chord structures and instrumentation that keeps the musician in me happy.  “Never Stop Singing” is quite possibly one of my favorites on the album. I love the minor chord usage along with the piano and choir. I can see this as a fantastic Easter worship song.

Previously released on his live CD/DVD Happy Day, we find a new version of “Jesus Saves”. I LOVED the live version of this song on the Happy Day recording and was anxious to hear what this new studio version might sound like. And it is totally different! This studio version is a unique interpretation of the original.  The introduction is more subtle than the live recording which gives the song more room to build dynamically.  It’s a great recording and I was quite pleased with it.  Some might say it’s oversaturated with various sounds etc…but I am a proponent of letting the musician be creative with the things they can do in a studio.  It’s a great version of an already amazing song.

Overall, Love Shine Through is a very solid studio album from Tim Hughes. As a fan of his music for the past ten years, I am pleased to hear how his sound and songwriting continues to be inspiring and creative.  This recording is a MUST for any worship leader looking for singable tunes your local church can sing. If you’re a worship leader/songwriter aching for good personal worship music that has a creative edge to it…this will NOT disappoint.  A MUST have in your worship music collection for 2011!
